Much has been written about the shift towards “value-based” care. While we have traditionally associated this concept with capitated care or “managed care,” this transformational paradigm is evolving in all care models, including traditional fee-for-service practice models.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, representation, and resources at global, national, and local levels.
Disparities in health outcomes related to socioeconomic status (SES) and racial and ethnic background became a paramount issue over the last twenty to thirty years and continue to be a significant issue in the U.S. healthcare system. Patients diagnosed with serious illness suffer from these disparities manifested by fewer advance care planning discussions, more hospital deaths, and fewer hospice transitions.
Food insecurity (FI), defined as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally balanced foods to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, is closely linked with social and economic disadvantage and is a major public health problem. In 2020 nearly 13.5 million households (representing about 38.3 million people) in the United States reported FI, including 5.2 million older adults.
A Minority Population’s Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that impact health decisions and health behaviors related to COVID-19 for a primarily Hispanic population. The qualitative study included a convenience sample of 43 students enrolled in a school of allied health.
