AAHCM Accomplishments

AAHCM members have built the field of home care medicine by their work in building thriving practices. As the professional society for this field, the AAHCM has removed barriers, set standards, provided education, and fostered the development of legislation to facilitate growth, allowing for meeting patient need. Highlights include:

  • Achieving a material increase in Medicare reimbursement rates for home and domiciliary care visits;
  • Developing the first ever Ethics Statement for this field
  • Writing the first booklets on how to develop house calls, and this year the first ever Field Guide and Guidelines for those wishing to develop, operate or grow their programs;
  • Developing and conducting the first Medical Director training seminars for home health agency Medical Directors;
  • Developing and conducting the first faculty development seminars for medical school faculty interested in teaching home care medicine;
  • Administering and developing the Home Care Certification Exam;
  • Developing the specifications and fostering the passage of the Independence at Home legislation
  • Representing the interests of members in a myriad of regulatory issues from audits to quality and incentive reporting programs
  • Successful advocacy to influence the termination of a carrier wide coding audit that was materially, financially and operationally harming members. (May, 2011)
  • Developing clinical practice guidelines on wound care and other topics
  • Conduct of Annual Scientific Meetings to educate all in the "best practices” of the field

And much more lies ahead…

  • Supporting successful implementation of IAH;
  • Providing ongoing practice management technical assistance support
  • Providing educational materials in more forms—not just in writing but in webinars, on site meetings, and more.
  • Fostering identification of "best practices” and standards for program development and operation
  • Fostering the spread of home care medicine programs to more needed populations, with more models and more sources of adequate payment support
